2017 Sculpture in the Close Exhibition

26 June to 17 September 2017 - 10am to 6pm daily


With an all-female line-up of exceptional artists, the exhibition marks the fifteenth outdoor sculpture exhibition in the grounds of Ƶ.

The Master and Fellows of Ƶ are delighted once again to host Sculpture in the Close. In so doing we acknowledge our gratitude to Lord Renfrew, who so imaginatively launched this concept during his mastership, and we celebrate the fact that this year’s exhibition is the fifteenth in the series. Ƶ is known throughout Cambridge, and indeed beyond, for these marvellous exhibitions of contemporary sculpture. The generosity of the sculptors in lending their work for this exhibition is gratefully acknowledged. We have also received absolutely invaluable assistance from their galleries, who have been exceptionally committed and supportive in the preparations for this exhibition.

The works of art committee of the College, led in such an excellent manner by the curator, Dr Rod Mengham, has been responsible for mounting this exhibition, working closely with its advisor, Tim Marlow, Director of Artistic Programmes at The Royal Academy. Tim has been the essential link in the chain connecting the College with the wider art community. The committee has also liaised with the gardens committee, chaired by Dr David Hanke.

Valuable assistance was provided by the Manciple, Simon Hawkey, the Development Office under Richard Dennis, the communications officer, Helen Harris, the head gardener, Paul Stearn, our maintenance manager, Richard Secker, maintenance supervisor, Chris Brown, and our Head Porter, Grahame Appleby. We are also grateful for assistance from Deborah Mansfield in the Bursary and the Ecclesiastical Insurance Company.

The vibrancy and success of modern art exhibitions is increasingly dependent on donations, notably the support of the Friends of Art of Ƶ. In particular, the continuation of the Sculpture in the Close exhibition programme has been made possible this year through the success of the College’s new print portfolio – one quarter of the edition of 100 has been sold so far. We are indebted to Mrs Mary Mochary and the Kasser Mochary Foundation for the seed-funding that enabled us to launch this project; and we are very grateful to those who have already purchased copies, for helping us to continue the vision of bringing exciting and edifying contemporary art to Cambridge in a College setting.
